The head coach for the Downey Viking Volleyball High School team reached out to me looking to update the overall appearance of the team. The goal was to design uniforms that looked unique and would stand amongst the competition. The coach had a philosophy of "Look good, feel good, play good" and hoped that by having great uniforms would encourage other students to look into the volleyball team and attract potential players.
Initial Concepts
The inspiration the head coach was for the shorts to be a strong and bold appearance that can look complete without a jersey. From that conversation we had 4 concepts that eventually narrowed down to one. I worked directly with the Downey high school volleyball coach to design custom shorts that reflected their team spirit and identity. We started by discussing their school colors, mascot, and any design preferences from the coaches. I then developed a series of design that were mocked up. The mindset was a balanced of bold and energetic visuals that would stand out on the court. After gathering feedback, I refined the design together. The final result was a set of custom shorts that the team was excited to wear and proud to represent.
Uniform Design - Shorts
The school has an indoor and beach volleyball team that would share the same shorts with the jersey top being different between indoor and beach. The shorts would be an inspirational starting point for the jerseys that would come next. The shorts used a rune pattern that wrapped all the way around and a Viking mascot in the front.
Uniform Design - Jersey
Once the shorts were approved we moved forward with the jersey for the beach volleyball team. We wanted to keep things simple but still bold. Keeping that in mind the final design used a gradient with minimal design elements that fit well with the shorts.
Social Media Graphics
With the approved jersey design finished, the last thing was to create a series of graphics that would help elevate the social media presence of the team. I created a series of assets that the head coach could use for their online presence to give a uniform look on and off the court. The plan was to have the team's designer use these as templates and add their volleyball players into the graphics.
